C.F. Hansen was also involved in that period’s buildings erected for philanthropic purposes, which in this case was to meet the middle classes’ demand for cheap, but nevertheless decent apartments.
Trøstens Bolig (The Home of Consolation) is spartan and sober. This reflects both its purpose and C.F. Hansen’s stringent style, but it also reflects the generally subdued style of the time resulting from a declining economy which reached its nadir with the state bankruptcy of 1813.
Trøstens Bolig looks out on three very different views of the city, and this has affected the three facades of the building. Towards the cathedral, the façade is opened up by a spacious courtyard providing light for the apartments. Towards the narrow Skindergade, the façade forms a wall, while the gable end on the third side with the oblique corners provides a suitable transition between the two.
Although Trøstens Bolig only had few financial resources, C.F. Hansen did not hesitate to give the building a monumental entrance on Skindergade in a traditional neo-classical manner.
