Listen to music of the Golden Age (Gade) indspillet as recorded by dacapo

The Danish Golden Age resounded to music. The period from the middle of the 1780s to the mid-1850s was the epoch when music in Denmark really became Danish music. Everyone loved music, from the court in Copenhagen to the rural population in the provinces. The best of the music of the period – from the simplest strophe in a song to the greatest forms of artistic music – have been a living part of Danish music since then. The greatest composers of the time were C.E.F. Weyse, F.D.R. Kuhlau, J.P.E. Hartmann, H.C. Lumbye and N.W. Gade. They have contributed a large part of the best known Danish songs and musical compositions, and their works have in recent decades found their way to the country’s concert halls and a large new public.
