Christoph Ernst Friedrich Weyse

Composer (1774-1842)

Listen to Weyse’s music as recorded by Dacapo Records

Weyse stands as a composer who maintained the ideals of Viennese classicism in danish music. He is perhaps best remembered today for his melody to Grundtvig’s hymn Den signede dag (The blessed day) and the popular romantic hymn, Det er så yndigt at følges ad (To walk together is fair indeed).

Weyse’s simple and sensitive Morgen- og Aftensange (Songs for Morning and Evening) with texts by B.S. Ingemann also occupy a prominent place in the treasury of Danish song. He also composed Singspiels, symphonies and works for piano, and he arranged Danish folk melodies.

Weyse was a popular guest at parties during the Golden Age. A virtuoso pianist, he loved good food and enjoyed being surrounded by young admirers.
