Kamma Rahbek

(1775-1829)

Kamma Rahbek held a salon for poets and leading cultural figures in Bakkehuset. Among those attending were Adam Oehlenschläger, N.F.S. Grundtvig, B.S. Ingemann and Hans Christian Andersen.

As the hostess for the gatherings, Kamma encouraged and inspired her guests. Thus she helped give women a new cultural position as mediator and reconciler between the writers of the age. That she also helped to mould them is shown by Hans Christian Andersen’s reaction when she called him a poet: “… it was the first time anyone had associated the word poet with me, it went through my blood and soul, tears came to my eyes and I know that from this moment my thoughts were awakened to working as a poet and author…”

Kamma Rahbek was unusually cultured and well read, and she also cultivated and developed her feminine activities such as growing flowers and making beautiful boxes. Kamma Rahbek was one of the first Danes to bring flowers into the sitting room, not only bouquets, but also as potted plants.
